L’usinage par électroérosion (EDM), par enfonçage de matrice, nous permet de concevoir une forme désirée en utilisant des décharges électriques. Le matériau est enlevé de la pièce à usiner par une série de décharges de courant se reproduisant rapidement entre deux électrodes, séparées par un liquide diélectrique. C’est l’intensité du champ électrique obtenu en augmentant la tension entre les deux électrodes. L’ajout de nouveau diélectrique liquide dans le volume inter-électrodes est communément appelé « flushing ». Après un passage de courant, la tension entre les électrodes est rétablie à ce qu’elle était avant le claquage, de sorte qu’un nouveau claquage diélectrique peut se produire pour répéter le cycle. Nous utilisons principalement cette méthode pour des pièces profondes et nos électrodes sont en graphite ou en cuivre.
